Clinical researchers in the United Kingdom recently discovered a substance in pomegranate that they think could slow the progression of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

The compound is called punicalagin, which is a chemical compound that might slow the onset of Alzheimer’s. It also may cut down inflammation that can come with illnesses such as Parkinson’s. The researchers, who are at the University of Huddersfield in the UK, now have initiated a new research study that is exploring new types of drugs that could treat these type of neuro-inflammation.

These researchers have been focusing on the compound in pomegranates for more than two years. There is of course no cure for Alzheimers or Parkinson’s, but it is thought that punicalagin could possibly slow the development of both diseases because it is able to slow the inflammation in certain brain cells, which are called micrologia. The inflammation in these brain cells can cause the destruction of more brain cells, which can lead to the progression of both diseases.

At this time, the lead researcher on the study is trying to figure out the amount of the pomegranate compound that is most effective. He noted that regular consumption of pomegranate has many health benefits, such as prevention of the type of neuro-inflammation that leads to both diseases.

The study concluded that the best juice products are 100% pomegranate, which means that about 3.5% of the juice will be punicalagin. Also, most of the antioxidant compounds are located in the outer skin of the fruit.
